Rolex Submariner “Red Sub” – Model 1680 (1974) 

This is a long time favorite, and it may be hard to part with.  

An icon among vintage Rolex timepieces, the Submariner Red 1680 represents one of the most sought-after variants in the brand’s storied diving lineage. Produced in the early 1970s, this example from 1974 carries the hallmark red “Submariner” script on the dial — a detail that distinguishes it from later editions and contributes to its enduring collectability.

Powered by the Caliber 1570 automatic movement, the watch features the original acrylic crystal, date display with cyclops lens, and the classic 40mm stainless-steel Oyster case. The piece shows natural wear consistent with its 51 years of age, preserving the authentic character that collectors prize.

Adding to its rarity, this particular example includes the factory-issued bracelet with the famously mis-engraved “PATETED” diver’s extension, an error that has become a legend among Rolex enthusiasts. 

The band currently on the watch matches the original and has just gone through a refurbishment and is almost as tight as a new watch, and has 11 links. You also receive the original band with full 12 links included the PATETED diver's extension.

Condition/Notes

- watch shows signs of wear consistent with age and use.

- case, bezel, bracelet, and clasp are scratched, scuffed, and dented.

- crystal is scratched and nicked.

- original bracelet is stretched as most models in this age range are, but has all 12 links. The refurbished bracelet is tight, and very nice to wear and has 11 links

- bezel insert is a replacement that took place during service, the pearl is chipped and is hard to turn in places.

- The watch has been serviced at least twice, and is running as expected. 

- The watch is currently stored in a winding box. 

- Slight corrosion on the case is visible through the crystal at about the 8 o'clock position. 

NOTE: The only thing I guarantee is that the watch is authentic and running. I can warrant, or guarantee it is dive ready. I am a collector, not a watch maker so I do not own the tools for pressure testing and other in-depth tests.
